UGC Ads: How to Get Creator-Style Videos That Actually Sell

User-generated-content ads often outperform polished commercials. Here’s how to brief creators, what to film, and how to turn UGC into winning ads.

Scroll through TikTok or Instagram and most of what you see is people talking to their phone cameras. Ads that look like that content, known as UGC (user-generated content) or creator-style ads, blend in, feel trustworthy, and very often outperform expensive, polished commercials. Here’s how to do them well.

What makes UGC work

  • It looks native. It doesn’t scream “ad,” so people give it a few seconds.
  • It feels like a recommendation. A real person sharing an experience is more persuasive than a brand talking about itself.
  • It’s fast and affordable to produce. That means you can test many more ideas.

Finding creators

You have a few options:

  • Customers who already love you. Check your reviews and tagged posts.
  • Micro-creators in your niche. Smaller creators often have more engaged audiences and more realistic rates.
  • UGC creators. Some creators specialize in making content for brands to run as ads, rather than posting it to their own followers.

Whoever you work with, agree in writing on usage rights: where you can run the content, for how long, and whether you can edit it.

The brief is everything

Creators aren’t mind readers. A great brief includes:

  1. Who the customer is and what problem they have.
  2. The one key message. Not five.
  3. Must-show moments: unboxing, the product in use, a close-up of the texture or result.
  4. Several hook options to film (you’ll test them against each other).
  5. Do’s and don’ts: claims they can’t make, competitor names to avoid, pronunciation.
  6. Technical notes: vertical 9:16, good natural light, clear audio, no background music (you’ll add it in editing).

Ask for multiple takes of the first three seconds. The hook matters most.

Proven UGC formats

  • Problem → solution: “I was so tired of ___ until I found ___.”
  • Unboxing / first impressions
  • “3 reasons I switched to ___”
  • Day-in-the-life featuring the product naturally
  • Before/after, where appropriate and honest
  • Reply to a comment: answering a common question or objection
  • Founder-to-camera: the founder explaining why they made it

Editing for performance

Raw footage becomes an ad in the edit:

  • Lead with the strongest moment; cut every second of dead air.
  • Add bold captions. Many people watch without sound.
  • Cut in close-up product shots (B-roll) to keep it visually moving.
  • End with a clear call to action and the offer.
  • Make multiple versions: different hooks, lengths and CTAs from the same footage.

Measuring and iterating

Judge UGC ads like any other creative: hook rate, hold rate, click-through rate and cost per purchase or lead. When you find a winner, ask the same creator for more, or brief new creators on the same winning angle. For the full testing process, see our Meta ads creative testing framework.

Stay honest

Creators should only say things that are true about their experience, and paid partnerships need to be disclosed according to platform rules and advertising guidelines. Authenticity is the whole reason UGC works, so don’t fake it.
