AI Search Optimization: How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT & Google AI
People now ask AI assistants for recommendations. Here’s how to make your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite.
A growing share of people start their search with an AI assistant: “What’s a good marketing agency in Scottsdale?” or “Best protein snack for picky kids?” These tools answer with a short list of recommendations, and if your business isn’t on it, you’re invisible to that customer.
The good news: the fundamentals that help you show up in AI answers overlap heavily with good SEO. Here’s what matters.
1. Be crystal clear about who you are and what you do
AI systems summarize. If your website is vague (“We’re passionate about excellence”), there’s nothing concrete to summarize. Every important page should state plainly:
- What you offer
- Who it’s for
- Where you operate
- What makes you different
Write it the way a customer would describe you to a friend.
2. Build pages that answer real questions
AI answers are assembled from content that directly answers questions. Create pages and sections for the questions your customers actually ask:
- Service pages with clear FAQs
- Pricing guidance (even ranges or “what affects the price”)
- Comparisons (“X vs. Y: which is right for you?”)
- How-to guides related to your product or service
Use descriptive headings. A heading like “How long does a Shopify store build take?” followed by a direct answer is easy for any system to understand and quote.
3. Add structured data
Structured data (schema markup) labels your content in a machine-readable way: your business name, address, services, FAQs, reviews, products and articles. It helps search engines, and the AI systems built on top of them, interpret your site correctly. Every page on this site, for example, includes it.
4. Get mentioned in places AI trusts
AI assistants lean on sources that show up repeatedly across the web. Help them find you:
- Google Business Profile: complete, accurate, active, with photos and fresh reviews.
- Reviews: on Google and the platforms relevant to your industry. Encourage detailed reviews that mention specific services.
- Directories and associations in your industry and city.
- Press, podcasts and partner websites that mention you by name.
Consistency matters: make sure your name, address, phone and description match everywhere.
5. Make your site technically accessible
If crawlers can’t read your content, neither can AI. Check that:
- Important content is in the HTML, not only loaded by scripts
- Pages load fast and work on mobile
- You’re not accidentally blocking crawlers in robots.txt
- Your sitemap is submitted and up to date
6. Show real expertise
Content that’s clearly written by people with first-hand experience (specific examples, original photos, real process details) stands out from generic text. Case studies, behind-the-scenes content and practical advice all help.
7. Track it
There’s no perfect “AI rankings” report yet, but you can:
- Regularly ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask and note whether you appear
- Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics
- Ask new leads how they found you
The bottom line
Optimizing for AI search isn’t a trick. It’s being the clearest, most trustworthy, best-documented answer to your customers’ questions. Do that well and both Google and AI assistants have every reason to recommend you.
