The Shopify Conversion Rate Checklist: 25 Fixes That Actually Move Sales
A practical checklist to raise your Shopify store’s conversion rate, covering speed, product pages, trust, checkout and follow-up.
More traffic is the expensive way to grow an online store. Converting more of the traffic you already have is the cheap way. Here’s the checklist we run on every Shopify store we touch, roughly in order of impact.
Speed and mobile
Most of your shoppers are on their phones, often on so-so connections. Every extra second of loading is a chance for them to leave.
- Compress and resize images. Upload images at the size they’re displayed, not straight off the camera.
- Audit your apps. Every app can add scripts. Remove the ones you don’t use, and check the theme for leftover code from apps you’ve uninstalled.
- Limit homepage sliders and autoplay video. They’re heavy and rarely drive sales.
- Test on a real phone. Tap through your store on a mid-range phone, not just your laptop.
Product pages
This is where sales are won or lost.
- Lead with the best photo. Clean product shot first, then lifestyle, scale and detail shots.
- Show the product in use. Short video or UGC-style clips answer questions faster than text.
- Write benefits, not just specs. “5g of real protein” is a spec. “Protein your kids will actually eat” is the benefit. You need both.
- Answer objections on the page: shipping cost and time, returns, sizing, ingredients, compatibility.
- Make the Add to Cart button unmissable, and keep it visible (sticky) on mobile.
- Show reviews near the top, with photos if you have them.
- Offer bundles or “frequently bought together.” It raises order value without more traffic.
- Use clear variant pickers. Swatches beat dropdowns for color. Show sizes that are out of stock instead of hiding them.
Trust
Shoppers who don’t know you need reasons to believe you.
- Clear shipping and returns policy, linked near the price, not buried in the footer.
- Real contact information: email, phone or chat.
- Consistent, professional branding. A mismatched logo or low-res banner quietly signals “risky.”
- Security and payment badges near checkout. Don’t overdo it; a couple of recognizable ones are enough.
Cart and checkout
- Show a free-shipping progress bar if you have a threshold.
- Enable express checkouts: Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal.
- Don’t surprise people with costs. Unexpected shipping or fees at the last step are a top reason for abandonment.
- Keep the cart simple. One or two relevant upsells max.
Navigation and search
- Name collections the way customers think, not the way your warehouse is organized.
- Make search work. Check what people search for and make sure those searches return results.
- Put best sellers one tap from the homepage.
Follow-up
Most visitors won’t buy on their first visit, and that’s normal.
- Capture emails with a genuinely useful offer: a discount, a quiz, early access or a guide.
- Turn on your core Klaviyo flows: welcome, browse abandonment, cart abandonment and post-purchase. These run 24/7 and are often a store’s most profitable “channel.” More in our guide to essential email flows.
How to prioritize
Don’t try all 25 this week. Look at your analytics funnel: product views → add to cart → checkout started → purchase. The biggest drop-off tells you where to start. High product views but few add-to-carts? Work on product pages. Lots of carts but few checkouts? Look at shipping costs and checkout friction.
